Description
****This is a work in progress!!****
This Excel file will calculate the optimal (minimize taxes) withdrawal schedule to get funds from a regular IRA to a Roth IRA.
Although pretty flexible, it assumes the user is retired and is no longer contributing to either (IRA or Roth).
Every cell in yellow needs to be filled with one’s own numbers and best guesses for future numbers.
The optimization is run using Excel Solver, it can be run from the top Excel menu in the Data section.
Since the number of variables involved goes over the limit of the free Solver distributed by default with Excel, it is necessary to “install” OpenSolver, unless you have a full Solver licensed from Frontline Systems. OpenSolver is free, open-source, and can be downloaded from http://opensolver.org. Install just means the file (an .xlam file) needs to be opened along with (just before or just after…) this file. Finally, about OpenSolver, they offer four solver options, you need the Linear version (not the Advanced version) that matches your OS (Windows or Mac).
I will work on adding a video explaining how I use it to give you an idea of how you can use it.
All constructive feedback will be appreciated!
